As in, don’t plan to build a manned space station when a one man shuttle can do the job - kind of discipline?

If you mean discipline as in tenaciousness I think that you and Jason Fried are dead wrong. It’s more a reality sense the software business needs. Far too many vendors believe that they can build Oracle in two days with half the staff of a fast-food restaurant.
What medium sized software company lack in reality sense, they make up for in discipline/tenaciousness.
